Description

Location: Arts Lab, Level 3, Union House

SCUM is bad Shakespeare. SCUM is wrong Shakespeare. SCUM is anti-shakespeare, un-shakespeare, re-shakespeare. SCUM, hosted by the Melbourne University Shakespeare Company, is a multi-medium mini festival within a festival; featuring short plays, performance pieces, visual and video art, creative writing, music, and digital works.

There are six short plays being featured, with performances every night, while in the afternoons the rest of the art will be exhibited in the performance space. All of the works are inspired by the Bard in some way but seek to challenge what is considered “good” Shakespeare by twisting and manipulating it until it is barely recognisable. The focus is especially on creating art that subverts the traditional white, male, heteronormative perspective of his work. SCUM is a festival for art that would be looked down upon by those who have been making “proper” Shakespeare for the last 400 years.
